IJVs allow firms to better deal with pressures related to efficiency and flexibility (Powell, 1987). Formation and performance of these IJVs is an important domain in the international business literature. Scholars have used numerous different theoretical lenses. Meanwhile, empirical studies have identified factors that influence the formation and performance of IJVs. However, some of the empirical findings are contradictory (Robson, Leonidou, & Katsikeas, 2002). These inconsistencies may be the result of several things. First, the IJV domain is fundamentally complex. The formation of IJV not only involves two or more independent firms, it is also across national borders. Managing such a complex organization by itself is difficult.
